The Afghan Medical Complex (AMC), led by the Atta Welfare Foundation, visited the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH&RI) in Hyderabad, India, gaining valuable exposure to one of South Asia’s leading oncology centres. Established in 2000, BIACH&RI is a 500-bed non-profit hospital offering comprehensive cancer care across medical, surgical, and radiation oncology, alongside diagnostics, research, and education. AMC’s team toured key departments — from LINAC-equipped radiotherapy units to chemotherapy wards and surgical theatres — and learned about integrated patient flows, affordability models, and the role of research in cancer care. The hospital’s leadership and staff expressed strong support for AMC’s mission, offering guidance and assistance for its design and operational development. This visit provided AMC with practical insights and strengthened its vision of building Afghanistan’s first multi-oncology hospital to deliver free to affordable, quality local treatment.
Introduction
The staff — from doctors and nurses to administrators and management — welcomed us warmly, gave us a detailed tour, and generously shared their time, knowledge, and insights.
About Indo-American Cancer Hospital
Founded in 2000, the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute is a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing high-quality cancer care at affordable costs. The hospital combines advanced technology with compassionate service and has built a strong reputation for patient-centred care.
Its services span medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, diagnostics, and research, making it a comprehensive institution for cancer treatment. With over 500 beds and a full spectrum of cancer services, it stands as a model of excellence in oncology care in the region.
A Guided Tour of Departments
During our visit, the staff at Indo-American Cancer Hospital gave AMC’s team a complete tour of the facility. We had the opportunity to learn about each department and division, including:
- Outpatient and Inpatient Services: Comprehensive systems for patient care and flow.
- Medical Oncology & Chemotherapy Units: Advanced treatment areas designed for patient comfort and safety.
- Radiation Oncology: LINAC units and bunkers designed for precision treatment.
- Diagnostic and Imaging Facilities: Laboratories, pathology, and imaging centres supporting early detection.
- Surgical Oncology Theatres: Equipped for complex cancer surgeries.
- Research and Education Units: Dedicated to innovation and training future healthcare professionals.
The structured organisation of these departments provided AMC with valuable insights into how a large-scale oncology hospital functions day-to-day.
Willingness to Support AMC
One of the most inspiring aspects of this visit was the openness and generosity of the hospital’s doctors, nurses, and management. They not only gave us an in-depth tour but also expressed their willingness to support AMC.They assured us that if AMC requires advice or assistance in its planning, design, or operational journey, they would be happy to provide support wherever possible. This spirit of solidarity reflects the shared mission of healthcare institutions across the region: to fight cancer with knowledge, compassion, and collaboration.
Why This Matters for AMC
For AMC, this visit was a chance to learn first-hand from a successful, large-scale cancer centre. Observing BIACH&RI’s systems, infrastructure, and patient care gave us practical lessons in:
- Hospital planning and patient flows.
- Departmental integration for efficiency.
- Importance of research and education alongside treatment.
- Balancing affordability with quality in oncology care.
These lessons will directly inform AMC’s design and operational strategies, helping us avoid potential challenges and adopt best practices.
Looking Ahead
The visit to Indo-American Cancer Hospital was both motivating and educational for AMC’s team. It reinforced our commitment to building Afghanistan’s first dedicated multi-oncology hospital, a facility where Afghan patients can receive free to affordable, quality, and local cancer treatment without the hardship of travelling abroad.
We are deeply grateful to the staff of BIACH&RI for their hospitality, guidance, and willingness to stand by AMC’s mission.
