Abstract
The Afghan Medical Complex (AMC), an initiative of the Atta Welfare Foundation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) India to strengthen care for Afghan thalassemia patients. TSCS, one of the world’s largest voluntary organisations for blood disorders, will support AMC through clinical and technical guidance, training of Afghan healthcare professionals, research collaboration, and community outreach. The partnership also aims to secure affordable, high-quality medication and influence health policy to prioritise thalassemia treatment in Afghanistan. This collaboration not only addresses an urgent gap in healthcare but also builds long-term capacity, offering Afghan families hope for accessible, free to affordable, and sustainable care for blood disorders alongside cancer treatment.

Introduction

The Afghan Medical Complex (AMC) by Atta Welfare Foundation is proud to announce a new partnership with the Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society (TSCS), India. It was an honour and pleasure to meet the TSCS team, who welcomed us warmly and expressed their commitment to supporting Afghan thalassemia patients.

This collaboration has been formally sealed through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking the beginning of a long-term partnership focused on clinical care, technical support, and improved access to treatment for Afghan families.

Why This Partnership Matters

Thalassemia is a serious inherited blood disorder affecting thousands of families in Afghanistan. For too long, patients have lacked access to comprehensive treatment, affordable medication, and specialised expertise. This MoU reflects AMC’s commitment to addressing not only cancer but also blood-related disorders such as thalassemia.

Through collaboration with TSCS India, AMC aims to bring free to affordable, high-quality treatment and care within reach of Afghan patients who need it most.

Areas of Collaboration

The partnership between AMC and TSCS India will focus on a wide range of critical areas, including:

  • Clinical and Technical Support (Voluntary Basis): Sharing medical expertise and guidance for thalassemia care.
  • Training and Capacity Building: Equipping Afghan doctors, nurses, and technicians with specialised skills in diagnosis and treatment.
  • Research and Data Collaboration: Collecting, analysing, and sharing data to improve understanding and management of thalassemia in Afghanistan.
  • Community Outreach and Awareness: Educating families and communities to reduce stigma and improve early diagnosis.
  • Operational and Strategic Support: Advising AMC on developing services and facilities for blood disorders.
  • Policy and Advocacy: Working together to influence healthcare policies that prioritise thalassemia treatment in Afghanistan.
  • Affordable, High-Quality Medication: Collaborating to secure cost-effective access to safe and reliable medicines for Afghan patients.

Building Capacity and Hope

This partnership is not just about technical expertise; it is about building hope. By connecting Afghanistan with an organisation that has decades of experience in thalassemia management, AMC is creating pathways for Afghan children and families to access care without leaving the country.

The exchange of knowledge, skills, and resources will help Afghanistan develop its own long-term capacity to manage and treat thalassemia, reducing dependency on costly treatments abroad.

Looking Ahead

The signing of this MoU with TSCS India marks the start of a new chapter in AMC’s journey. Together, we will work to ensure Afghan thalassemia patients have access to the same dignity, care, and treatment as patients elsewhere.

This partnership reinforces AMC’s broader mission: to provide free to affordable treatment for cancer and related conditions, while also building sustainable healthcare systems in Afghanistan.

Conclusion

The Afghan Medical Complex by Atta Welfare Foundation expresses its deepest gratitude to TSCS India for their generosity, vision, and willingness to support Afghan patients. By joining hands across borders, we are not only building medical capacity but also building trust, solidarity, and hope.
